About Dundas Castle

Dundas Castle has a recorded history from the twelfth Century, when the Dundas family acquired the lands, but some archaeological finds point to a much more ancient history.

The original Keep was built in 1416 after a license was granted to James

Dundas by the Governor of Scotland, the Duke of Albany, who fought under Robert the Bruce.  In 1424 Dundas was rewarded a license to extend the Keep resulting in the 4 levels and the unusual 'L' shape of the building

In 1818 the modern castle that you see today, designed by the great Scottish architect William Burn, replaced a seventeenth Century house built beside the Keep.  The post-War period was a lean time, with many Estates in Scotland being broken up. Dundas survived, but both the castle and grounds deteriorated. Sir Jack inherited Dundas on the death of his mother in 1995 and serious restoration work began. The Keep had not been inhabited for over 300 years and dry rot had become a problem within the castle.  Sir Jack's wife Lady Lydia, who is a talented interior decorator, started a complete refurbishment of the house which included replacing the original silk walls in the Library.
